Kate spent a year in Germany. As a high school senior she won a scholarship from the United State Congress and the German Bundestag to cover the cost of the trip. She lived in a small town in the Rhineland wine country, Stephanshausen. Stephanshausen is north of the Rhine river and West of Wiesbaden.
During her stay Kate was able to do some traveling, spending time in Belgium and Berlin. She was also able to spend with our distant relatives in Hermersberg. The time spent in Germany was a great education, she has extended her family with German relatives that she stays in contact with often and has traveled back to see.

I've been pretty focused on the upcoming JDRF One walk, and it's brought this whole experience to the forefront of my mind. It's caused me to think over the whole experience of the last 9 months.
I'll never forget sitting in the bathroom of her hospital room the night she was diagnosed, ugly-crying after she got another battery of finger pokes and injections, she tried to keep a stiff upper lip, but she was scared and in pain and she cried. I realized this was her new reality, like, forever. I barely made it to the bathroom before I lost it, I wanted SO badly to take all of that fear and pain from her, but I was helpless. After I regained most of my composure I sat in her bed and we cried together. I told her how brave she was, WAY braver than Daddy, he ugly cried and HE wasn't the one getting poked!
I look at Ruby with such admiration, she's taken a terribly trying diagnosis and treatment in stride for the most part. What 9 year old would be alright with 14 pokes a day? I know when I was 9 I wasn't pumped about going to the doctor for one! Highs make her jittery, lows make her tummy "wiggly", pokes and site changes are scary and they hurt, but she handles it all like a pro. I've always told her that like all little girls, she's made of sugar and spice and everything nice, BUT she's got steel too. She's showed that steel every single day since diagnosis. My heart is full of pride for her, she is a little warrior, our Wonder Woman.
I think of just how much our lives have changed because of this disease. We spent the first few weeks drinking from the firehose of information, we learned how little we actually knew about Type 1, and we learned the basics of how to keep her safe and healthy, it was overwhelming. Constant math for dosing, checking her bag of supplies before we leave the house even for a quick trip to the store to make sure we were prepared for highs or lows, worries about her going to school or to a friend's house without us, and many sleepless nights watching blood sugar levels. I don't know that I'll ever stop worrying about her, there's just so many tragic stories of T1D kids who have lost the battle. It's a nearly invisible disease, but it's frighteningly dangerous.
I think of the community that has gathered around us, we're blessed to have a great endocrine team right here at Children's, our family is so involved and supportive, they've dove right in to learn how to care for Ruby. So many other T1D families nearby have come out of the woodwork to share experiences and lend a knowing and sympathetic ear. Many friends have been there to give beautiful encouragement or just listening to stories of the day, which at times has been SO needed. I am grateful to each and every one of you who has said a prayer, learned about T1D, given a hug, reached out with kind words, or contributed to the JDRF in Ruby's name.
I'm thankful for the advances in medicine that help Ruby be so much more independent, her glucose monitor allows us to see her levels anywhere at any time, giving us the confidence to let her venture places without is, her pump allows her to dose herself for food. Added bonus, together they take those 14 pokes per day down to about 4 every 10 days. With all of these advancements I'm hopeful that Ruby will see T1D cured in her lifetime! I will never stop supporting groups like JDRF as they work to fund the research that will find that cure!
I'm looking forward to Saturday, seeing froends gather around Ruby to show support, seeing hundreds of little (and not so little) warriors and their families, hearing stories and most of all celebrating Ruby and her strength in the face of this trying disease. It's going to be fun! I know it will be emotional, heck if you're there you might get to see me ugly-cry.
