BURIAL: Also known as Schlesvig-Holstein Verein's Cemetery. The German Cemetery is located in the heart of a German settlement and near the site of the old German Hall, known to many as the "Old Dutch Hall". The early settlers soon found they needed a burial ground, so they met at the German Hall on September 5, 1882. Henry Schneider was named the chairman of the day, and the following officers were elected: Claus Lamp, President; Rudolph Peters, Secretary; and George Ohrt, Treasurer. On motion, the society agreed to buy four acres from Claus Lamp who was given $200 in cash, and he agreed to give a clear deed and have it recorded in the office of the County Clerk, Blair, Nebraska.

BURIAL: At the meeting June 21, 1885 the German Cemetery Association adopted their by-laws. They stated: "The meetings shall be conducted in the German Language and at burials there shall be no differences or acception (exception) as to Language, Religion or Race, as long as they pay the dues."

BURIAL: The cemetery was surveyed and laid out by Surveyor Kline. The Association started with 24 members, each getting 2 lots in their names which are recorded in Proctocal by the Secretary. The size of the Lot is 20' by 20' and the price is $10.00 a lot. Block 19 is for single graves at $2.00 each grave and the single graves have to be one foot apart.

BURIAL: Many of the records are in German, so not everyone can understand what took place at the early meetings. They were to hold their meetings in the Schleswig Holstein Hall with the consent of the "Schleswig Holstein Verein." The annual dues were $1.00 per lot when started. In 1910 the president was Heinrich Wulf.

Gustav married Julia Anna Schneider [image] 1 daughter of Heinrich D L Schneider and Fredericka Johannah Maria Schneider on 17 Mar 1877 in Blair, Washington, Nebraska. Julia was born on 8 May 1861 in , Washington, Nebraska. She died on 10 Mar 1946. She was buried in Washington County, Nebraska.

After the Death of Gustav Julia lived in the family house in Bennington. Charley was the only one in the family who didn?t marry, so he lived with his mother. He was her 'problem child' as he drank too much. It was hard life for Julia. she had no moderen conveniences. There as no indoor plumbing. She had to pump and carry all her water. There was a cookstove in the kitchen, and in the winter it was moved to the dining room, as she lived in the three front rooms where there was another heating stove and easier to keep warm. Cobs, wood , and coal were used for cooking and heating. There was no electricity, just kerosene lamps. The old rain barrels near the back door, was used to catch rain water from the roof, and this water helped on wash day. Julia always kept a few chickens in the backyard for a supply of eggs. She had eggs for her own use, and others she sold. She would take her basket of eggs to Mangold store, and exchange them, for few groceries. The vacant lot, nest to the house, was a garden space . She was always so proud of her growing things. May 8th was always a great day for the hole family to get together and celebrate grandma Julia?s birthday. on this special day, each family brought potluck dinner. The family had grown to be quite a group, with all the grandchildren, and it usually took three settings around the dining room table before everyone had been served. Usually the men ate first, then the woman and children. One thing made her especially happy??that was when her sons had water piped into her yard where she could go out and turn on a faucet putting an end to her water pump. However, that was the closest she got to a modern conveinience in her lifetime. She never complained and was always cheerful and happy, accepting her lot in life. In Jan. 1916, her health started to fail. She complained about weakness in her legs . (For several years she had an open sore on her neck that wouldn't heal, and she kept a clean white hankie tied around her throat??this must have been cancerous .) When Grcndma Julia became bedfast, Katy came for a while to help care for her mother, then she had to go back to the job with the railroad as she didn?t want to lose her job. Selm and Martha (2 daughter?in?laws), helped care for grandma after that. Poor Grandma, who was so sick in bed, would see Charlie come home drunk every day, and her big concern was what would happen to him after she was gone. She lived until Sunday, March 10, 1946 at 6 pm. She was almost 84 years old.
